FORT BELVOIR, Va. (Army News Service, May 4, 2007) — The Army Program Executive Office Soldier will soon provide an improved Army combat shirt to Soldiers deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan. The flame-resistant long-sleeved shirt, which retains the moisture-wicking capability, breathability, and durability of other components in the ACU, also has many of its other features, including cargo pockets, infrared identification tabs, and hook-and-loop fasteners for the American flag. The new shirt has a foliage green torso and sleeves in the universal camouflage pattern, and sports seamless shoulders and side panels for comfort, along with integrated anti-abrasion elbow pads, and a small Army Strong logo centered on the chest.

The high performance shirt, designed to be a base layer, can be worn directly under the Interceptor Body Armor, according to Maj. Clay Williamson, assistant product manager for clothing and individual equipment.

The ACS is made of an anti-microbial cotton and rayon blend fabric treated with a new process that penetrates to the fiber level. It provides fire-resistance for the life of the garment. “It is completely safe, non-toxic, and allows us to treat fibers that were once not treatable,” Maj. Williamson said.

The shirt integrates with other flame-resistant components, such as the Army combat pants, to provide head-to-toe protection against burns. The Army combat pants are the same as the ACU pants, except they are made of a flame-resistant material, according to the major. Soldiers’ hands are protected by flame-resistant gloves that have been a part of the Army’s Rapid Fielding Initiative.

This ensemble further complements the Army’s system-of-systems approach to force protection, which integrates layers of protection for Soldiers on the battlefield.

“I want to assure the American public, the Soldiers, and their Families that they have the best equipment when and where they need it. If there were something better, we would buy it; and we’re always looking for something better,” said Brig. Gen. R. Mark Brown, Program Executive Officer Soldier.

Wow, I could use one of those myself. Thank God, for the high tech geniuses who come up with these things.

I’m really curious to see how these shirts hold up in the field. Looks like a great idea, but in the Army, great ideas sometimes aren’t.

  3. Kiowa Driver says:

They would be good for the aviation field that I am in but is this only for females as the article wrote or are they going to make the guys wear shirts cut for a female?? Also the “ARMY STRONG” logo has GOT to go. That is the stupidist thing I have ever seen in my 21 years of service. AND it’s right in the middle of her chest…yeaaaaaaa lets draw attention there.

    Kiowa!
The shirt will be issued to all genders. Since I’m the master of this blog domain, I preferred to post a more aesthetically pleasing photo. I believe the original link in the article showed two models, one male, the other female.
I too, hate the logo, but it sure beats that “A” on the front back of the PT shirt.

  5. Kiowa Driver says:

    Ham.
The A is on the Back lol

  6. Ham says:

I wondered why my PT shirt always fit funny.

Yes, you’re right, my CRS is getting worse.

  7. Joshus says:

I am a supply sergeant for an HHC and my CSM wants one of these. Does anyone know of an NSN or how I can get these things while deployed

  8. Ham says:

Good question, Josh. I’d click on the PEO link in the article to see if it tells specifics. Since you are already downrange, I guess you can forget your MOB site.

    Google Search: Army Combat Shirt

link to Massif Mountain Gear Mountain Gear Company

info there on where and how to buy

  10. Gary says:

Have NSNs been issued for these yet?

  11. Ham says:

Sorry, gary, haven’t found them yet…

  12. SSGCavSupply says:

PEO has not completed initial fielding yet. Once the initial fielding is completed they will request a full NSN right now they will have an experimental nsn like 8415-01-XXX-0000. Give it a year or so and they will be set up. I am a Supply Sergeant currently in Afghainstan and we have 5 of these for testing. They are not to bad but they do get beat up quick. And ya know I agree after 15 years this “Army Strong” BS has got to go. I mean if they are refering to Odor after being in a firefight then yes, but I think they need a new motto to. I have been “All I can Be”, I have been an “Army of One” and I think it’s time for something like “World Peacekeeper” or “Terrorist Hunters” maybe even “The Long arm of the Law”

  13. Ham says:

    SSGCavSupply,

Thanks for the information! Appreciate it.

That fashion show shirt, is as gay as all get out. I cant imagine an 11 bravo, comin into the chow hall after patrol, takin his flak jacket off, and standin there with that silly ass thing on. That’s pathetic. Too gimmicky. There was NOTHING wrong wtih the bdu and dcu, with brown t shirts. I cant believe that, and that silly logo was even CONSIDERED.. Maybe I wont re-enlist..

  15. dragonflydm says:

I don’t see this lasting long as nearly every male soldier will complain it looks “gay” and every female soldier will claim that it is designed to focus on the “chest.”

It looks like someone took all the sleeves from “Larry the Cable Guy” and sewed them onto a T-shirt.

    Dragon,

Actually, this is one of my most visited posts and I have yet had any response from someone who has one. So, either they aren’t fielding it or folks are please with it.

I’m probably heading off to Afghanistan next year and plan on getting one to try. I’ll give an after action report once I try it out.

    Thanks for stopping by.
