Provo Girl Pilsner

May 3, 2007

It might not be so obvious from this blog, that I am particularly fond of good beer.  But, I must admit that hops makes me heady and wheat make me weak.  Yes, the puns were intended.  Last week as I flew back from the West Coast, I found a little pub at the Salt Lake City airport with a great poster on the wall. Sorry for the quality, but cell phone cams aren’t the best.

ATT00001

Did a google the other day to find out more of the product and found this website.  PG Pilsner is offered by Wasatch Beers and Squatter’s Brewing Co.  Of particular note, they offer such titles as:

  • Cap’n Bastards Oatmeal Stout
  • Chasing Tail Ale
  • Full Suspension Pale Ale
  • Polygamy Porter and
  • Sliprock Lager

Not having much time between flights, I only had time to try the Wasatch Hefe (Hefe being my fave) and found it of sound body and full flavor.  Unfortunately, it still had the slight taste of the lemon I hastily wrenched from the glass as the waitress set it down.  As the “man laws” dictate, don’t fruit the beer!  Learning to drink hefeweizen in Germany, I never take lemon in my beer.

Never the less, it was a very smooth beer, had the proper cloudiness and none of the bitterness I find with the Ales.  I’d recommend it.

Bush Expected to Veto ‘Hate Crimes’ Bill

May 3, 2007

Are you aware of H.R. 1592; The Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act?

HRC states that the act gives the Justice Department additional power to enforce investigations and prosecutions of individuals charged with bias-motivated violence.  Biases covered include race, color, gender, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability.

Further HRC states, “The LLEHCPA provides the Justice Department with the ability to aid state and local jurisdictions either by lending assistance or, where local authorities are unwilling or unable, by taking the lead in investigations and prosecutions of violent crime resulting in death or serious bodily injury that were motivated by bias.”

For your information HRC is working to support Gay, Lesbian and Transgender equal rights.  Obviously, they feel it necessary to increase Federal power to stop “hate” crimes. Democrats are actively pushing for this bill.

President Bush and his advisors have shown their opposition to the bill for the following reasons, they believe that the bill creates secondary classes of victims, meaning that such hate crimes against the select groups somehow warrants more federal involvement.  Bluntly, murdering a gay man is somehow worse than murdering a policeman.

Randy Hall of CNSNews.com states it clearly here.

Two specific issues I have with this bill include the amount of disproportionate justice for select victims over others and the increase of Federal involvement in local law enforcement.

Firstly, this bill smells of affirmative action, creating special influence of certain groups over others for the sake of perceived “inequality”.  We can all remember the last few years how AA is falling by the wayside as the concept actually creates the very same problem it hoped to overcome.

But, secondly and most importantly, this bill creates more power to the Federal government.  Correct me if I’m wrong, but don’t the Democrats accuse President Bush of Fascism and government control?  Handing more judicial power to the Federal Government would be the last thing they want, isn’t it?

I’m confused here, someone clarify for me.
